Do you know your values?
Maintaining Your Principles in the Face of Uncertainty
As an ally of the Purple Method, you understand the importance of our mission to create a world in which people around the globe can come to work knowing that they are safe and valued. Although it’s (still!) only February, it is already clear that 2025 is going to bring unique challenges to our efforts to create safer, more inclusive workplaces and communities.
As I explained in an article for Law360, recent Executive Orders calling on employers to end “illegal” DEI programs have raised more questions than they have answered. To add to the confusion, President Trump recently took the unprecedented step of firing two of the three Democratic members of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the federal agency tasked with enforcing the nation’s workplace equality and anti-discrimination laws. In a follow up Law360 article, I discussed how the EEOC now lacks the quorum it needs to issue new rules or to change or revoke existing guidance.
What does all this mean for your own workplace or community? While a lot is unclear at the moment, one thing is certain: these unprecedented times call for unwavering commitment to our values.
Do you know what your values are? Now is a great time to define them and ensure your next steps are aligned with the principles that make your workplace unique. At the Purple Method, our values – transparency, inclusion, and levity – form the foundation of the work we do and the relationships we have with our partners, regardless of external events.
If you need help identifying your values or guidance about how to stay committed to them in the current environment, the Purple Method provides organizational culture and strategic consulting offerings that were made for this moment. They recognize that, while every organization has its own unique challenges and needs, we all benefit from working at a place that is clear about its values and sticks to them through challenging times.
Listen & Learn:
If you’d rather listen and learn, I will be moderating a teach-in on Civil Rights, Civil Liberties, and the Rule of Law with an amazing group of panelists at Politics & Prose bookstore in Washington D.C on March 7. Tune in live at 7:00 p.m. to hear from Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Kelly Robinson, President of the Human Rights Campaign, among others, about the recent roll back of LGBTQ+ protections, and efforts to eradicate initiatives promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. Learn more here.
I appreciate your ongoing support of our work, especially during these difficult times. Together, we can stay committed to the values that define us, regardless of the headwinds.
To safer workplaces everywhere,
Ally Coll
