Six years later…

Six years ago this October, Tarana Burke’s longstanding #MeToo movement went viral and sparked a global reckoning about workplace misconduct in Hollywood and across industries. Shortly after, the news broke that the law firm where I was working at the time had attempted to silence women speaking up about Harvey Weinstein’s behavior. I soon left that job to focus on creating policy solutions and systemic change to address sexual harassment in the workplace.

Six years and a global pandemic later, the world looks very different – but the importance of our work remains. Recent data from 2023 shows that employees are still hesitant to report workplace misconduct, with approximately one-third saying that they didn’t report problems they experienced or witnessed. Despite the progress made by the #MeToo movement, about half of employees still don’t believe their organization will appropriately address the problem and they fear retaliation if they report.

Purple Method on the Road

With this in mind, I’m so grateful that the Purple Method continues to have many opportunities  to share best practices for preventing and addressing workplace harassment around the country. Here are just some of the places you can find us this fall:

  • American Bar Association’s Business Law Section Meeting in Chicago: In September, I presented alongside Margaret Egan, General Counsel of Hyatt, and other attorney experts about how corporations can mitigate risk and address harassment.

  • Conference Board’s Women Lead Festival in New York: In October, I joined Elizabeth Nieto, Global Head of Equity and Impact at Spotify, and Lynn Haaland, Chief Privacy Officer and Deputy General Counsel for Product Legal and AI at Zoom.

  • HR Acuity Expert Webinar: In September, our Counsel and COO, Shea Holman, led an expert webinar about the impact workplace harassment has on organizations.

  • Women in Government Relations Conference: In October, Shea also presented on corporate initiatives to provide access to reproductive healthcare in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

  • Pennsylvania Human Rights Commission’s Sexual Harassment Symposium: Our Policy Director Aaliah Zonicle will share emerging trends and best practices for addressing harassment in Philadelphia this November.

We love sharing thought leadership and helping individuals, organizations, and companies alike create safer, more empowering workplaces. Whether it's by conducting anti-harassment training, reviewing your corporate policies, or speaking to an Employee Resource Group, we’d love to support you – so please get in touch!
