EEOC’s New Recommendations and How We Can Help
Employees today care about more than just their salary or growth potential at a company; they want to work for an employer that recognizes and responds to shifting values in society, including ensuring a safe and equitable work environment. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recently released updated guidance for preventing harassment in federal workplaces. But the guidelines provide useful recommendations for private-sector employers as well.
One of the main recommendations encourages employers to take preventative measures, with a focus on fostering an environment that doesn’t tolerate harassment rather than primarily focusing on preventing potential lawsuits. The Purple Method’s Corporate Certification Program was modeled on this approach to proactively address workplace harassment. Certification programs have been effectively used to create shared norms and expectations in other contexts where traditional regulatory systems have failed.
Now more than ever, it is vital for companies to signal to current and future employees that they take the issue of workplace harassment seriously and are willing to create safe, inclusive work environments proactively, rather than waiting to act after misconduct has occurred. Allowing an outside party like the Purple Method to assess how well your company is preemptively addressing workplace sexual harassment sends that message.
